Humanity of the playground
I came to the decision of taking the idea of a playground and its humanist tendencies and question its purpose in an urban environment. How does play present itself in an enclosed designated space in an urban environment?
Apart from a visualization of the data I collected I also wanted to create a manifesto. An object to show my critique of the fenced playground and a way to reach out to people to try and have them raise the same questions as me.
However since most of my data was through observation I needed a way to collect people’s thoughts outside of the playgrounds. I had conversations with people close to me about their thoughts on the subject, and one topic that arose the most was the issue of ‘safety’.
This raised the question: “What is safety?” and “What is protection?”
Does protection maybe also include the freedom for children to develop their senses and explore the way they exist in a space, through making mistakes and sometimes getting hurt in the process?
